University Syllabus Guidelines

A syllabus is an outline of the academic content of a course, but it also serves to communicate course goals, content, expectations, and responsibilities. These guidelines were developed by the University Academic Council and are designed to aid in syllabus development and to ensure appropriate communication with students as they enter into a 51反差婊 class setting. The syllabus represents a mutual understanding between faculty and students about course expectations and policies and serves as the primary reference point for resolving any questions or concerns that arise regarding the course. While faculty are afforded academic freedom in the development of syllabi and course content, syllabi must comply with all accreditation, school, and University policies. Below is a list of best practices to include in your syllabus.

  1. Course Information
    1. Course title and catalog number
    2. Course description
    3. Prerequisites (if any)
    4. Class meeting time, meeting place
    5. School and current academic term
  2. Instructor Information
    1. Professor name and professional title
    2. Professor contact information
    3. Office hours and office location
  3. Learning Outcomes
    1. The syllabus should provide clearly defined goals regarding the educational outcomes of the course and should define the broader program goals that are served by this course.
    2. Describe the alignment of course-level learning outcomes (CLOs) with program learning outcomes (PLOs) and/or institutional learning outcomes (ILOs).
  4. Support of University Mission
    1. Provide a brief description of the relationship between the course and the institutional mission of 51反差婊 University, as defined in the University Mission Statement.
  5. Course Content
    1. Required course materials and technology
    2. Course calendar (including, at a minimum, key dates such as exams and major assignment due dates)
    3. Topical content
    4. Course assignments
    5. Assessments
  6. Grading
    1. The syllabus should offer a clear definition of the methodology to be used for assessing student learning and the assignment of a course grade. Late policies and attendance policies should be clearly defined. If participation is going to be graded in the course, a clear rubric explaining how participation will be measured should be included in the syllabus or distributed as part of class materials.
  7. Student Conduct
    1. The syllabus will typically offer a statement on ethical behavior in class, respectful classroom discourse, and/or plagiarism. The process to be enacted upon violation of course and community standards should be defined or referenced (Community Standards).
  8. Student Accessibility Statement
    1. Any student with a documented disability (physical, learning, or psychological) requiring academic accommodations should contact the Office of Student Accessibility (OSA) at the Student Assistance Center (SAC) or 310.506.6500 as early in the semester as possible.
    2. Faculty should use the latest OSA syllabus statement or contact OSA for more information.
  9. Academic Integrity Statement
    1. As a Christian university, we hold each member of our community to the highest standards of moral and ethical behavior. Syllabi should refer to the academic catalog or school website regarding academic integrity. Include the process that will be invoked upon a violation of the academic integrity standards applicable to the course.
  10. Artificial Intelligence
    1. Given the prevalence and accessibility of AI tools, it is necessary to indicate the extent to which AI (such as Gemini, ChatGPT, or other tools) is permitted or prohibited. If AI is permitted or partially permitted, be specific in terms of how the available technology can be used for assignments. Please refer to the University Academic Policy on Artificial Intelligence, the , and AI use syllabus statements from the Provost鈥檚 Office.
  11. Attendance Policy
    1. A clear attendance policy should be stated in the syllabus. If the course is hybrid, the syllabus should clearly state the required dates when students must be physically present in the classroom, and this policy should apply equally to all students.

Optional Content

  • Intellectual Property Statement
    • Consider a statement regarding the intellectual property of the course. Consult your school and the University鈥檚 policy on copyrighted material.
    • Example: The syllabus, lectures, and all course materials are protected by copyright. They are for the student鈥檚 personal educational use only. The content should not be reproduced, sold, or distributed without the professor鈥檚 written permission, as this violates copyright law and University policy.
  • Student Success Resources
    • Consider referencing online and campus resources for student success, such as libraries, tutoring, IT, counseling, and spiritual life.
  • Learning Management System
    • Faculty should include a statement about their use of the course LMS site, or, if they choose not to use the LMS, clearly share how the professor will communicate assignment grades and how students will be able to determine their grades throughout the semester.
  • Course Evaluations
    • Course evaluations are an important part of the feedback process that students are asked to engage in at the end of each course. Evaluations are read by the professor, the professor's supervisor, and by tenure and promotion committees. These evaluations are intended to be used by faculty as formative feedback to help strengthen the course and improve the student learning outcomes.
